The story of Jana Bastien

From a small Slovak town to European stages

Jana Bastien on stage

Jana Bastien comes from Čadca in northern Slovakia. She grew up in a strict Catholic environment that taught her discipline, service to others, sensitivity towards people and a belief in the power of words.

Music has been with her since childhood. She sang in her local Catholic church, gaining her first experience with her voice, performing and the power of a shared experience.

In the third year of primary school, she spent an entire year unable to hear. The cause remained unknown for a long time; her hearing returned after surgery at a hospital in Martin. This created a powerful paradox in the future singer’s story: she discovered music through shared singing as well as through a world of complete silence. The theme of hearing and being heard later found its way naturally into her work and her connection with audiences.

Among her first series of public performances were the annual SPK Christian events. In sports halls across Slovakia, the programme combined singing, stage performances and education for young people in the Catholic faith.

She also took part in the Dobrá novina charity initiative, visiting homes with carol singers at Christmas and helping raise funds to support children and communities in Africa.

As an active youth leader, she travelled to churches across Slovakia and worked with Catholic youth through stage and musical performances. She combined singing, theatre, education and working with people — elements that remain a natural part of her performances today.

This period laid the foundation for her approach to music: a concert as a place that brings people together, gives them energy and can carry real meaning.

After secondary school, at the age of nineteen, she moved to Czechia, where she now lives, creates and collaborates with Czech and Slovak musicians and producers.

Her journey from church singing to the rock stage was a profound life transformation. Exclusion from her original community, major life changes and the search for her own identity led her to music where she can fully unite sensitivity, courage and her own voice.

This is where what defines Jana Bastien today was born: positive rebellion. The courage to follow her own path, preserve her humanity and turn experience into energy that helps others.

How Jana Bastien came to be

A name that opened the way to freedom

The stage name Bastien was born on Radio Kiss Morava, where Jana hosted the programme Odpolední Fresh from 2016 to 2017 while studying medicine.

In 2018, she completed her medical studies and at the same time began working in medicine and pharmacy, which she has developed alongside her music career ever since.

Radio became the place where she could fully express her humour, energy, temperament and love of art. The name Bastien gave her space for her own work and gradually became her artistic identity.

Under this name, she began bringing all her worlds together — medicine, music, working with people and the desire to share energy. Her journey shows that a person can develop multiple talents, follow their passions fully and create a life on their own terms.

The band’s positive rebellion grows from this idea: the freedom to follow your own path, trust your voice and courageously do what you truly love.

Jana Bastien is a symbol of the courage
to live every side of yourself fully.

Music from real life

Jana’s lyrics grow from relationships, loss, life changes, new beginnings and experiences that force a person to reconsider who they are and where they want to go next.

In her music, she transforms them into perspective, defiance, humour and energy. It is not about perfection or self-pity. Jana Bastien sings about real life so people can recognise themselves in it, take something from it and experience it together for a moment at a concert.

More than a concert

Jana Bastien concerts combine music, emotion, humour, communication and genuine contact with the audience. With every performance, the band wants to share energy, open up important topics and create a space where people can feel accepted.

The goal is to build a community around the music for people who are not afraid to feel, speak out and live on their own terms.

So no one ever feels
alone in their own story.
